I keep an editorial calendar for my blog—which helps to prevent those moments of sitting down in front of my computer screen and drawing a total blank. Nobody likes those, “Uhhh, what the heck should I write about today?” creative blocks.
But, while my editorial calendar definitely helps me to be a little more proactive with my blog content, I’ll admit that I still come up short every now and then. I’ll sit down to create my calendar for any given month, and I can’t think of one single interesting thing to write about.
It happens to me all the time really. I think it happens to even the best writers—at least that’s what I tell myself to avoid spiraling into an endless state of self-doubt.
Luckily, I’ve perfected the art of finding inspiration for new topics. And, today my friends, I thought I’d share those with you! Here are five places I look for inspiration when I just can’t think of anything to blog about.
Of course, I write my blog for me. But, it’s also for you—the people who read it. I want you to come here and feel like you’re getting something out of each and every post I write, and not just listening to my random, nonsensical thoughts (please lie to me and tell me that’s true).
I get many emails, tweets, and messages from you guys asking questions—particularly about the freelance life! That always serves as great inspiration. I love to turn your questions into a post because I already know it’s relevant and helpful information. What could be better than that? Feel inspired to ask me a question and have me write a post about it? Give me a holler!
Sometimes when I’m feeling tapped out of ideas, I like to go back and read through my old posts to see if there’s a smaller idea I can expand on. I can always find new twists and unanswered questions by looking through my older content. Plus, it’s sort of a fun trip down memory lane!
Need I say more? I’ll often just search for a specific keyword and see what’s already out there. Oftentimes I’ll find a post that I disagree with and can take a different stance on, or even get inspired to create a helpful chart or guide of my own. Pinterest has no shortage of amazing inspiration—you already know this.
While I don’t treat my blog like a personal diary by any means, it still truly is grounded in reality. My real experiences and challenges have a huge impact on the content I create.
So, if I’m having a particularly tough time with a client or just learned a big lesson about my business, you can bet I’m going to share that with you!
Similarly to Pinterest, I love to comb through other blogs to see if I can glean some great new ideas for posts of my own. Obviously, I don’t copy posts from other bloggers. But, it’s always a great way to get the creative juices flowing!
Where do you look when you need inspiration for some blog topics? A girl can always use some inspiration!
Until next time!
