5 Small Ways I Boost My Confidence

Aug 25, 2015

Do you ever have those days (or heck, even weeks!) when you just feel pretty down on yourself. Maybe you made a big mistake at work. Or, perhaps you’re dealing with a bad breakout and a terrible hair day. Or, maybe you found out a friend was saying some not-so-nice things behind your back.

It doesn’t matter what happened — we all have those times when we just feel “blah” about ourselves.

Trust me, I’ve totally been there. In fact, I still find myself there. Often, in fact! You always hear that confidence is beautiful — but, it can also be fragile. You can be flying on the top of the world, only to have one small remark or comment quickly knock you down 8,000 pegs. It doesn’t take much.

So, what do I like to do during those times when I’m feeling sort of low and unworthy? Allow me to share!

5 SMALL WAYS I BOOST MY CONFIDENCE

1. PHONE A FRIEND.

This was always my favorite lifeline on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”. There’s nothing like a friend to pull you out of a tough time — million dollars on the line or not.

When you’re feeling crappy, sometimes a quick chat with a close friend is all you need to pick you back up again. Even if you just talk about funny memories or your favorite show, talking with a friend is a great way to take your mind off the negatives.

Admittedly, I frequently call my parents when I’m down in the dumps. Let’s face it — they’re the only ones who can really put up with my incessant whining.

2. KEEP A JOURNAL.

I know, I know. This seems a little out there. But, journaling can be a great confidence booster when you need one — especially if you do it with that in mind!

Imagine if at the end of every day you wrote one positive thing in your journal. Maybe it was something you did incredibly well, or something wonderful that happened. Whatever it is, you jot it down. Now, on those days when you feel negative, you have an entire journal of happy memories and real-life confidence boosters to flip through and reflect on!

Plus, just the task of journaling high moments will keep you focused on the positives day-to-day.

3. PUT ON YOUR FAVORITE TUNE.

I’m a firm believer that we all have that one song. You know the one — it comes on and you immediately are filled with a happy, sassy, take-charge sort of emotion. Maybe it’s Beyonce’s “Run the World” or Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”. Whatever it is, put it on and TURN IT UP.

Dance around like crazy. Strut your stuff all over the living room. Shake what your mama gave you. I guarantee that after those quick few minutes, you’ll be feeling like you’re the real Beyoncé.

4. DO SOMETHING YOU’RE GREAT AT.

Is there anything that boosts your confidence more than doing something you’re ridiculously phenomenal at? Whether that means you take a few minutes to work on a painting or you head out to tend to your overflowing vegetable garden, take a little break to do something that you’re undeniably skilled at.

For me, this usually results in belting show tunes alone in my house. No shame.

5. PUT SOME TIME INTO YOUR APPEARANCE.

This probably sounds a little (or a lot) superficial and unnecessary, but it always helps me. Isn’t there a saying that says something like, “When you look great, you feel great”? Perhaps I just made that up. Is it the other way around? Whatever, I always feel more confident when I’ve taken some time with my hair, makeup, or outfit selection. Again, superficial? Yes. Effective? Definitely.

What do you do for a solid confidence boost when you need it? I’d love to hear!

Until next time!
